About Header, Footer & Bates

Office and court documents often need a company name, a date or a unique Bates number on every page. Write {n}, {total}, {date} or {bates} in your text and the right value is filled in on each page automatically.

How to add a header, footer or Bates numbering — step by step

  1. Upload the PDF.
  2. Type the header and footer text you need.
  3. Turn on Bates numbering if each page needs a unique reference, and set the prefix and start number.
  4. Download the finished file.

Bates numbering, and who needs it

Bates numbering stamps every page with a unique sequential reference, usually with a prefix — ABC-000001, ABC-000002 and so on. Courts, law firms and tender committees use it so that any page in a bundle of thousands can be named without ambiguity.

Merge the whole bundle into one file with Merge PDF before numbering, so the sequence runs continuously across every document in the submission.

Headers and footers on ordinary documents

For a report or an assignment, a header with the title and a footer with your name and the date makes a printed copy far easier to handle — especially once the staple comes out. Keep it short; a long header collides with the page content.
