About Passport Photo Maker

The cyber café job, done yourself: upload a photo, drag and zoom to fit the face in the frame, pick a size (35×45 mm passport, 20×25 mm stamp, 51×51 mm visa) and download an A4 sheet. Cutting lines are printed on the sheet so trimming is easy.

How to make a passport size photo — step by step

  1. Upload one clear, front-facing photo. A plain wall behind you works better than a busy room.
  2. Choose the size you need. Passport 35 × 45 mm is the standard Indian size and is selected by default; stamp size, 25 × 35 mm and the US 2 × 2 inch size are also there.
  3. Drag the photo inside the frame and use the zoom slider until your head and the top of your shoulders fill it, with a little space above your hair.
  4. Pick your sheet — A4 paper or a 4 × 6 inch photo-lab print.
  5. Press the button and download the sheet. Cutting marks are printed between the photos so you can cut them straight.
  6. Print at 100% scale — in the print dialog, turn off 'Fit to page' or 'Shrink to fit'. This is the one step people get wrong.

What size is a passport photo in India?

The standard is 35 × 45 mm (3.5 × 4.5 cm). Passport applications, most government forms, PAN applications and school forms all use it. At 300 dpi that works out to roughly 413 × 531 pixels, which is why so many online forms ask for exactly that pixel size.

A few other sizes still come up: 25 × 35 mm on older forms, 20 × 25 mm for stamp-size photos on ID cards, and 51 × 51 mm (2 × 2 inch) for US visa applications. All of them are in the size list on this page.

How many photos fit on one sheet?

An A4 sheet holds around 30 passport-size photos, so one printout usually covers a whole family's form-filling for the year. A 4 × 6 inch photo-lab sheet holds 8 — that is the layout to choose if you are getting it printed at a photo studio rather than on your own printer.

Getting the print size right

The most common complaint about home-printed passport photos is that they come out slightly too small. That is almost never the photo's fault — it is the printer driver quietly shrinking the page to leave a margin.

In the print dialog look for Scale or Page Sizing and set it to 100%, 'Actual size' or 'None'. Anything that says 'Fit', 'Shrink oversized pages' or 'Fit to printable area' will make your photos undersized. Measure one photo with a ruler after the first print — it should be exactly 35 mm across.

Tips for a photo that gets accepted

If the form wants an upload, not a print

Online applications usually want a digital photo under a size limit — commonly 20 KB to 50 KB — rather than a printed sheet. For that, use Image Resize & Compress, which has ready presets for a form photo (20–50 KB, 3.5 × 4.5 cm) and for a signature (10–20 KB). If the form asks for a PDF instead, run the photo through JPG to PDF.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the size right when printing?

In the print dialog choose Actual size / 100%. 'Fit to page' will shrink or stretch the photos.

How do I get a white background?

The tool does not change the background. Use a photo taken against a white wall or one that already has a white background for the best result.

How many copies fit on a sheet?

About 24 photos of 35×45 mm fit on A4. You can also choose 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The cropping and the sheet are made by your own browser, on your own device. The photo never travels over the internet, which matters when it is going on an identity document.

Can I use a photo I took on my phone?

Yes, and most people do. Stand about a metre and a half from a plain wall, have someone take the photo at eye level in daylight, and it will be sharper than an old scanned print.

Do I need a white background?

White or very light grey is what most Indian departments ask for. This tool does not remove the background for you, so take the photo against a plain light wall to begin with.

Which paper should I print on?

Ordinary A4 paper is fine for form photos. If you want the glossy studio look, use photo paper and set the paper type in your printer settings to match, or take the 4 × 6 inch sheet to a photo lab.

Why are the cutting marks useful?

They are faint corner lines between the photos. Line a ruler up with them and every photo comes out the same size with square edges — much cleaner than cutting by eye.

Can I make photos for two different people on one sheet?

Not on a single sheet — the tool works from one photo at a time. Make two sheets and print them separately.
