About PDF to Word

When you need to fix a small mistake in a PDF, a Word file is the easiest route. This tool extracts all the text into a .docx. The layout and photos are not carried over — for editing text, that is usually enough.

How to convert PDF to Word — step by step

  1. Upload the PDF.
  2. Convert it to an editable document.
  3. Download it and open it in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice.

Set your expectations first

PDF and Word are built on opposite ideas. A PDF fixes every character at a coordinate on the page; a Word document describes paragraphs that reflow. Converting means guessing where the paragraphs, columns and tables were — and no converter, free or paid, gets a complicated layout perfectly right.

Plain documents — a letter, a report, an application — convert well and need only light tidying. Multi-column layouts, forms with boxes, and pages with text wrapped around images come out needing real work. Expect to fix the formatting, not to get a finished file.

When conversion cannot work at all

If your PDF is a scan, there is no text in it to convert. You will get a document containing a picture. Run Image to Text first to recognise the words, then paste them into your word processor.

And if you only want to change a date or a name, converting to Word and back is the long way round. Edit PDF lets you click the text and retype it directly.

Frequently asked questions

Do I get the exact layout?

No. You get the text, not the design. If you need the layout too, edit the PDF itself with Edit PDF.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

No — run OCR on those first.

Is my file uploaded?

No, the conversion runs in your browser.

Will the layout be identical?

No. Simple documents come close; complex ones need tidying. That is true of every PDF to Word converter.

Can I convert a scanned PDF?

Not usefully — there is no text to convert. Use Image to Text first.

Will images come across?

Simple images usually do; complex graphics often do not.

Is it better to just edit the PDF?

For small changes, yes — much better. Use Edit PDF.
